They Call Gen Z Stupid. Here’s Why They’re Actually Worth More Than That.

They Call Gen Z Stupid. Here’s Why They’re Actually Worth More Than That.

Scroll through comments or older conversations and you’ll see the same complaint: “Gen Z is stupid.” Short attention spans, poor spelling, addicted to phones, can’t handle real life. The label is loud. But when you look closer, the picture is more complicated — and often more impressive — than the stereotype suggests.

Where the “Stupid” Label Comes From

  • Different communication style (memes, short videos, informal language)
  • Heavy phone and social media use
  • Questioning traditional paths (jobs, college, authority)
  • Visible mental health struggles and openness about them

These differences get simplified into “they’re dumb” by people who grew up in a different environment.

What the Stereotype Misses

1. They Grew Up With More Information Than Any Generation Before

Gen Z has access to almost unlimited information from a young age. That doesn’t make them automatically wise, but it does mean many of them are better at spotting bad information, comparing sources, and learning new skills quickly than older generations were at the same age.

2. They Are More Aware of Mental Health and Boundaries

What some call “soft” is often just willingness to talk about anxiety, burnout, and unhealthy work culture. Many are actively trying to avoid the patterns that left previous generations exhausted or silent. That awareness has value.

3. Practical Skills Look Different Now

They may not memorize facts the way older generations did, but many are highly capable with digital tools, content creation, research, and adapting to new platforms. In a world that runs on technology, those skills are not useless.

4. They Question Systems Instead of Blindly Accepting Them

Challenging expensive college degrees, traditional 9-to-5 paths, or outdated workplace norms is not automatically stupid. Some of it is naive. A lot of it is a reasonable response to economic realities that previous generations did not face at the same scale.

5. Resilience in a Difficult Environment

Many entered adulthood during or after major disruptions (pandemic, economic uncertainty, constant online comparison). Navigating that while still building careers, relationships, and skills is not a sign of weakness or low intelligence.

The Fair Middle Ground

Gen Z is not magically smarter or better than other generations. Like every group, it has people who struggle, people who excel, and plenty in between. The constant “they’re stupid” narrative usually says more about generational discomfort with change than about actual ability.

Judging an entire generation by its worst online moments or by how different it looks from the past is easy. Recognizing that many of them are capable, adaptive, and dealing with real pressures is more accurate.

The stereotype is loud. The reality is more mixed — and often more capable — than the jokes suggest.
